Lemeul Eugene Lucas was born in 1900 in the state of Texas. He took his stage name, Gene Austin, from his stepfather. Starting off as a piano player in the dives of New Orleans and moving on to vaudeville, in his career as a singer in the 20s and 30s he sold over 80 million records. He wrote many songs, a number of which are now considered as classics: When My Sugar Walks Down The Street, How Come You Do Me Like You Do and The Lonesome Road, none of which made it into my listing above, and recorded many others such as Carolina Moon, My Melancholy Baby.

Gene Austin was a highly influential recording artist, underrated these days but important in the history of popular music, the first “crooner”, the Voice of the Southland.

It’ll be interesting for us to see if any fans of, the relatively unknown these days, Gene Austin, come forward with some anecdotes or favourite songs from this big-selling singer and songwriter. Roll up, roll up.

“The Beautiful Old” is an album by Marsteller & Rhodes who assembled popular songs a few decades older than Gene Austin’s and recreated them in modern versions with the greatest respect. The relevance is that, like Gene Austin, these are all songs my mum used to sing in the kitchen (when operating the mangle no doubt!) There are at least four in the Gene Austin list in that same category. One of my albums of the year, find a review here of The Beautiful Old
